Admiral Angelo Jachino

Adapted from the newsletter of the Italian Navy
dated January 1977

Admiral Angelo Jachino was born in Sanremo (not too far from Genoa) on April 4th, 1889 and at the young age of 15 entered the Naval Academy of Leghorn. Graduated as an Ensign, in the early years of his career he participated to the conflict in Libya and World War I. He commanded the gunboat “Carlotto” in Tsien-Tsien (China) when Italy was part of the control system for the Chinese “concessions”. Later, he completed a cruise around the world at the command of the Light Cruiser Armando Diaz.

Once back in Italy with under his belt a solid professional training and command, he was quickly promoted always giving clear proof of his exceptional qualities. At the beginning of World War II, Admiral Jachino was in command of a Naval Group and in a brief period of time he was given the command of a Naval Squadron, and then the joint naval forces, which he kept until April 1943. For two and one half years, he was the protagonist of the principal Italian naval operations assuming the role of antagonist to the British Admiral Cunningham.

During this brief period, although in command of a naval force technically inferior, he had courage and determination guiding it in brilliant tactical actions fighting back the powerful British fleet. Revelations published in the book “Ultra Secret” by the author Winterbotham about the unfortunate and much discussed episode of Cape Matapan (in which the Italian fleet lost three heavy cruisers on March 28th, 1941) and dedicated to Enigma, the system used by the British to decipher German signals thus allowing them to know about the intentions of the Italian fleet, have generated much historical revision. Consequently, revisions in judgment have brought to surface a clearer and more authentic portrait of the figure of Admiral Jachino, highlighting his talents as a tactician, though an unlucky one.

After the war, Admiral Jachino wrote various interesting books dedicated to naval history and which have much contributed to understanding the war at sea. In these books are discussed with honesty and balance the mistakes made by the Italian Commands both in preparation and execution. In his books, amongst which should be remembered “Tramonto di una grande marina” (Sunset of a great Navy), “Gaudo and Matapan” (Gavdo and Matapan), “La sorpresa di Matapan” (The Surprise of Matapan) , he postulated that the Italian fleet found itself against a tenacious enemy in conditions of inferiority due to the inadequacy of its technical means, the lack of aircraft carriers, and the lack of cooperation with the air force, but he always exalted the heroic behaviors of both sailors and aviators.

Admiral of the Fleet Angelo Jachino died in Rome on December 3rd, 1976 at the age of 87.

Algiers

December 1942, Operation N.A. 1

The submarine Ambra was supposed to bring a mixed unit near the Algerian port: three SLCs with their crews (6 men) and 10 “Gamma men” (divers saboteurs) of the X MAS (the “Gammas” were composed of elements of both the Navy and the Army, 5 and 5; their commander was the lieutenant of the Naval Arms Corps Agostino Morello); the submarine would release “Gamma” and SLC while resting on the bottom of the sea, while two men from the X MAS would remain on the surface, acting as lookouts.

The submarine Ambra

On December 4th, in the early afternoon, the submarine left La Spezia and three days later arrived off the Algerian coast; however, due to adverse weather and sea conditions, he had to wait until December 11th before he could approach Algiers to begin the final phase of the operation. Navigating submerged to elude the strong vigilance, and with the echo sounder broken, the submarine hit the seabed abruptly at about ninety meters. The boat kept dragging on the sandy bottom until it reached a depth of about 18 meters and then came to a rest.  However, when the two lookouts were sent to the surface, it turned out that the coast was not visible, nor were any ships to be seen.

A ‘SLC’ (slow moving torpedo, also knows as ‘pig’ or ‘chariot’

Moving again and very close to the seabed, stopping from time to time to send lookouts to the surface, the submarine finally found itself inside the bay with 6 merchant ships moored all around. Since they were already behind schedule, the raiders were sent out (first the “Gamma”, between 10.30 and 11 PM, followed by the SLC between 11 PM and 11.20 PM. However, the crews did not act with coordination: only one of the SLCs and five “Gammas” managed to carry out the attack, while the others hurried to try to return to the submarine and one surrendered to the local authorities, thus triggering the alarm. Despite the risk the Ambra remained on the bottom until 2.54 AM, before having to leave without anyone having returned; the raiders had all fallen prisoners.

Commander Mario Arillo

During the departure there was also a collision with a wreck, fortunately without consequences; It was not until 19:45 on December 12th – after being submerged for 36 hours – that the Ambra was able to return to the surface, recharge the batteries and refresh the air supply. At noon on the 15th, the submarine docked at La Spezia. Although less than half of the raiders managed to plant explosive charges, the steamers Ocean Vanquisher (7174 GRT) and Berto (1493 GRT) were sunk, and two other large merchant ships, the Empire Centaur (7041 GRT) and the Armattan (4558 GRT) suffered serious damage. Commander Mario Arillo received the Gold Medal for Military Valor; twelve of the raiders were decorated with the Silver Medal for Military Valor and another with the War Cross for Military Valor.

About us

REGIAMARINA ™ started in 1996 here in the United States as a small site dedicated to the Heavy Cruiser Gorizia, the only survivor of its class to the disaster of Matapan. Over the years, as Web technology evolved and became more complex, we have always strived to favor content over presentation. Still, after so many years of adding new sections and material, and having reached over 1,300 Web pages and thousands of daily visitors, we decided to make radical changes to the Web site.

Many years ago, to favor the fast deployment of new content without having to code Web pages, we implement a Swiss CMS (Content Management System) which allowed us to release new content – we used to publish in both English and Italian – somewhat more easily than coding HTML pages. However, we have now switched to WordPress and have opted to only publish in English. Eventually, in the future, we will also try to republish all the material in Italian.

Since every single page of the old site has been replaced, bookmarked pages or pages referred to in outside links will no longer work. If you cannot find what you were looking for, please use the advance search function or the site index.

As we continue gathering new material, we hope you may find this site of use to you.
